Combined Theory & Hazard Perception Research Study

Developing a continuous 10-minute CGI test clip combining theory questions and hazard perception to explore the potential of a unified driver assessment.

01

The Challenge

Building upon Jellylearn's relationship with Nottingham Trent University (NTU), a project primarily funded by the RAC Foundation explored whether combining the theory and hazard perception tests into one single continuous assessment could deliver better outcomes than the current two-test format. No such combined test had previously been developed or subjected to rigorous academic research.

02

Our Solution

Jellylearn developed a continuous 10-minute CGI clip that combined pop-up multiple choice questions — as per the current theory test — with hazards that performed in exactly the same way as the current DVSA test. NTU undertook a thorough research programme with young and experienced drivers to evaluate and measure the key differences and outcomes between these two cohorts.

Results

First-ever combined continuous theory and hazard perception test developed
Research programme conducted comparing young and experienced driver cohorts
Results presented at the CIECA 50th Annual General Meeting in Belfast
Findings contributed to the ongoing evidence base for future theory test reform
Jellylearn subsequently awarded a DfT grant to continue this research
